UN Condemns US Suspension of Afghan Asylum Applications

The United Nations has criticized a recent decision by a U.S. government agency under President Donald Trump to temporarily suspend the processing of immigration applications by Afghan citizens. The measure was taken following a recent shooting near the White House that targeted two members of the U.S. National Guard.
The UN responded to the decision by reaffirming the universal right to asylum, stating that seeking refuge is a fundamental human right that should not be denied to anyone. The international body emphasized that individuals fleeing war, violence, or natural disasters must have the freedom to seek international protection.
In response to the U.S. action, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reiterated its commitment to supporting Afghan asylum seekers in various countries around the world.
The U.S. government’s decision to halt the processing of Afghan applications has raised concerns about the fate of thousands of Afghan nationals fleeing Taliban rule. The Taliban administration has been widely condemned for human rights abuses, severe restrictions on women, and widespread violence — factors that have driven many Afghans to seek safety abroad.
