Powerful 6.6 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Northwestern Indonesia

A powerful earthquake shook the island of Simeulue, located off the northwestern coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia, late last night. According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake registered a magnitude of 6.6 and occurred at 11:56 p.m. local time.
The epicenter was determined to be at a depth of 25 kilometers beneath the earth’s surface, near the shores of Simeulue Island—an area that has historically experienced devastating earthquakes.
No tsunami warnings have been issued so far, and there are currently no confirmed reports of casualties or damage. Indonesian authorities have yet to make any statements regarding initial responses or protective measures.
Indonesia, situated on the Pacific ‘Ring of Fire,’ frequently experiences significant seismic activity. Previous earthquakes in the region have caused extensive damage.
