Herat Governor Meets Iranian Delegation to Boost Cross-Border Trade

Sheikh Mawlawi Islamiar, the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, met with Gholam-Hossein Mozaffari, the governor of Iran’s Khorasan Razavi province, who is leading a 65-member delegation visiting the region.

The meeting focused on expanding economic cooperation, facilitating goods transit, strengthening border trade, and exploring shared business opportunities between Herat and Khorasan Razavi. Both sides emphasized the need to establish clear frameworks for sustainable trade cooperation.

During the discussion, Islamiar expressed hope that the visit would pave the way for the development of joint markets and increased trade volume between the two parties. He noted that such exchanges can help unlock Herat’s economic potential and promote regional commerce.

Mozaffari, on the other hand, stated that Iran—particularly Khorasan Razavi—is interested in importing more goods from Afghanistan. He said Iran aims to meet part of its domestic market needs through Afghan products.

The talks come amid growing criticism of the Taliban administration over weak economic and foreign trade management. The absence of clear plans for boosting Afghan exports is seen as a major challenge in the country’s economic engagement with its neighbors.
