UN Security Council Holds Emergency Meeting on US Military Action in Venezuela

The United Nations Security Council convened on Monday at Venezuela’s request to discuss the United States’ military action in the country. The meeting focused on the national and regional security and legal implications of the incident.
The session began with a speech by Somalia’s representative, the Council’s current president. Prior to the meeting, Vasily Nebenzya, Russia’s UN ambassador, stated that the Council would address the US action in Venezuela and reports regarding the detention of Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro.
In this context, Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Ivan Gil Pinto sent an official letter to the United Nations requesting an urgent Security Council meeting and described the US move as a violation of sovereignty and a threat to his country’s national security.
During the session, Rosemary DiCarlo, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, warned of potential escalations in instability in Venezuela, noting that the situation could affect regional stability and international relations. She also expressed the UN’s concern about whether the operation aligns with international law.
The UN official emphasized the organization’s support for efforts aimed at finding a peaceful solution to Venezuela’s crisis based on inclusive dialogue.
Additionally, Russia’s representative to the Security Council sharply criticized the US action, calling it a blatant violation of international law and demanding the immediate release of Venezuela’s democratically elected president and his wife. He stressed that disputes between countries should be resolved through dialogue and diplomatic mechanisms, not through the use of force.
