Construction Begins on Water Dam in Shah Wali Kot District of Kandahar

The Department of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock in Kandahar Province has announced the commencement of construction on a water dam in the Shah Wali Kot district.
Local officials say the project is being funded through a partnership between local residents and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). The total cost of the project is estimated at 3.6 million Afghanis, and it is expected to be completed within the next three months.
According to Mohammad Hanif Haqmal, spokesperson for the Kandahar Department of Agriculture, the dam will be 64 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 8 meters high, with a water storage capacity of 40,000 cubic meters.
Authorities say the dam aims to address water shortages, manage seasonal water flows, prevent flooding, and improve irrigation for agricultural lands in the region.
Although such projects are considered vital for improving water resource infrastructure, the absence of a legitimate and accountable national administration has led to delays or instability in the implementation of many infrastructure initiatives in Afghanistan. So far, the Taliban administration has failed to take effective steps toward a comprehensive strategy to tackle the country’s severe water crisis and ongoing drought conditions.
