Deadly Crash on Herat-Kandahar Highway Leaves 10 Dead, 12 Injured

At least 10 people were killed and 12 others injured in a fatal traffic accident that occurred on Sunday morning, November 22, on the Herat-Kandahar highway. The incident took place in the Zawol district of Herat province, a region that forms part of a key transport corridor linking western and southern Afghanistan.

According to local sources within the Taliban administration, the accident occurred when a 302-type passenger bus heading toward Kandahar collided with a minibus known locally as a ‘Flancoach.’ Taliban officials in Zawol district have confirmed the incident.

The administrative deputy of the Zawol district police command, under Taliban control, stated that the victims have been transported to medical facilities in Shindand district and the central hospital in Herat city. The condition of some of the injured is reported to be critical, though no further details have been released.

The Taliban administration has yet to provide a clear explanation for the cause of the crash. It remains unclear whether driver negligence, poor road conditions, or lack of proper oversight played a role. The Herat-Kandahar highway has witnessed numerous similar incidents in the past, with inadequate monitoring of vehicle safety standards and traffic conditions cited as major contributing factors to the high death toll.
