Small Industries Expo Held in Kandahar with Participation from 50 Entrepreneurs

A major trade exhibition featuring small industries was held in Kandahar province, bringing together 50 small businesses supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM). Among the participants, 15 businesses were owned by women, reflecting their efforts to play a more active role in the economic sphere.

The exhibition was financially supported by the United Nations’ humanitarian assistance program in Afghanistan (UN_STFA) and attracted approximately 45,000 visitors. Exhibitors showcased handmade products, innovative local services, and community-based initiatives.

The event provided a valuable opportunity for local businesses to gain visibility, access new markets, and establish commercial connections. While such initiatives can contribute to improving the economic circumstances of local communities, the potential for sustainable growth remains challenged by widespread restrictions and the lack of systematic support from the Taliban administration.

The Taliban government’s social and economic restrictions, particularly its ban on women’s participation in public and professional spheres, pose a significant obstacle to the development of such local initiatives. These limitations have heightened concerns about the future of entrepreneurship, especially for Afghan women.
