UN Envoy Visits Girls’ Schools in Northern Kapisa Amid Education Restrictions

As girls’ access to education remains severely restricted across much of Afghanistan, the acting head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has visited girls’ schools in Kapisa province that are supported by UNICEF.
Grace Natalia Gannon, the acting head of UNAMA, said the aim of her visit was to show support for inclusive community-based education programs for girls. She emphasized that education for all, especially for girls, is a vital pillar for Afghanistan’s better future.
The visit comes as secondary and high school education for girls has been banned in most provinces following the Taliban’s return to power. Several educational projects by international organizations have also faced serious constraints under the current administration.
UNAMA has repeatedly called on the Taliban to ensure equal access to education for all Afghan citizens, particularly girls. However, the Taliban administration has imposed widespread restrictions, effectively denying millions of girls their fundamental right to education.
