Taliban-Appointed Envoy in Tehran Meets ECO Secretary General

Maulavi Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, appointed by the Taliban administration as ambassador to Tehran, has met with Asad Majid Khan, Secretary General of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
According to a statement published by the Taliban-run embassy in Iran, the meeting focused on strengthening ties between the Taliban administration and ECO, and on expanding the role of the embassy in the organization’s future activities.
Both sides also discussed effective strategies for the Taliban administration’s participation in ECO meetings and programs. The meeting comes as the Taliban remains unrecognized by the international community and is seeking to solidify its regional presence through such engagements.
The recent meeting is seen as part of broader efforts by the Taliban administration to gain regional legitimacy. However, these efforts continue to be met with skepticism by human rights groups and neighboring countries, due to ongoing criticism of the Taliban’s treatment of citizens—particularly women and minorities.
