Taliban Envoy Attends Climate Conference in Oman Amid Legitimacy Push

As part of the Taliban administration’s ongoing diplomatic efforts to gain international legitimacy, Hafiz Omar, introduced as its ambassador to the Sultanate of Oman, participated in a climate change conference in Muscat.

The event, organized by Oman’s Environment Authority and chaired by Dr. Abdullah bin Ali Al-Amri, the agency’s Director General, brought together several government officials and environmental experts. Discussions during the conference focused on Oman’s future climate initiatives.

Organizers announced that Oman’s “Climate Week” is scheduled to take place from September 14 to 16, 2026, at the country’s main conference center. According to officials, the event will feature newly released international research on environmental issues.

It was also reported that Hafiz Omar attended the sixth annual meeting of Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs a day before the climate conference. That gathering was attended by Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al-Busaidi, along with the heads of resident diplomatic missions and representatives of international organizations.

The presence of a Taliban administration representative at such events comes as no country has officially recognized the group. Moreover, national and international organizations continue to criticize the Taliban’s inconsistent approach to environmental protection and natural resource management within Afghanistan.
