Iran Considers Regional Summit to Ease Tensions Between Taliban and Pakistan

Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has announced that Tehran is exploring the possibility of hosting a regional summit aimed at de-escalating tensions between the Taliban and Pakistan.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, November 15, Araghchi said that diplomatic efforts have begun to establish stability between Pakistan and Afghanistan, expressing hope that the initiative will lead to tangible outcomes. “We have had phone conversations with the relevant parties and are working to pave the way for a regional meeting,” he said.

While he did not provide specific details about the timing or location of the potential summit, Araghchi emphasized that Iran’s diplomatic efforts in this regard are ongoing.

According to reports, Araghchi has held recent phone conversations with the foreign ministers of both the Taliban and Pakistan, stressing the importance of a peaceful resolution to their disputes.

He has also engaged in discussions with diplomatic officials from Qatar, Turkey, and Russia regarding the crisis. These moves follow unsuccessful mediation attempts by Qatar and Turkey to resolve the growing friction between the Taliban and Pakistan.

The Taliban, which currently lacks international recognition, has in recent months been embroiled in border and security disputes with Pakistan—conflicts that have raised regional concerns.
