OIC Envoy Meets Taliban Foreign Minister to Discuss Regional Tensions

Tariq Ali Bakhit, Special Representative of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), has met with Amir Khan Muttaqi, acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban administration, during a visit to Kabul. According to the Taliban administration, both sides emphasized the need to resolve border tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan through dialogue.

In a statement released by the Taliban Foreign Ministry, a range of issues were reportedly discussed during the meeting, including Afghanistan’s political and security situation, the return of refugees, drug trafficking, and regional developments. Muttaqi also briefed the OIC representative on recent tensions with Pakistan and the negotiations held in Istanbul.

The Taliban administration reiterated that it sees dialogue as a reasonable and effective solution for ending tensions. However, many analysts believe that the Taliban’s military confrontations with neighboring countries, particularly with Pakistan, have deepened regional mistrust.

During the meeting, Tariq Ali Bakhit stated that the OIC is committed to improving the situation in Afghanistan and is interested in expanding cooperation.

He also pledged to hold discussions with OIC member states in order to explore ways to facilitate the return of Afghan refugees.

While the Taliban administration has published details of the meeting, the OIC has yet to issue an official statement. This silence may reflect caution in dealing with an administration that has not been formally recognized by many countries.
