Former Afghan President Karzai Urges Taliban to Reopen Schools and Universities for Girls

On the International Day of Science for Peace and Development, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai released a statement emphasizing that science is a fundamental element for helping societies emerge from crisis and achieve sustainable peace.

Karzai stressed that, like other countries, Afghanistan urgently needs science and knowledge for progress and self-sufficiency, noting that overcoming the nation’s challenges is impossible without universal access to education.

He called on the Taliban authorities to urgently reopen the closed schools and universities for girls so that Afghan women and girls can contribute to the scientific and developmental future of the country.

The former president also urged the country’s youth — both girls and boys — to take advantage of every opportunity for learning and to work towards personal and societal growth. He expressed hope that, with the support of an educated generation, Afghanistan could move towards a path of peace and lasting stability.
