New School Construction in Herat Supported by the United Nations

The construction of a new school in Herat has commenced following the destruction of the Chapqal school in the Rabat-e-Sangi district due to a severe earthquake, which left over 900 students without an educational environment.

Officials from the “Habitat” institute, affiliated with the United Nations, have stated that they are working in collaboration with the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan to provide safe and quality educational opportunities for the students in this region.

Previously, the recent earthquake in western Afghanistan severely damaged many infrastructures, including schools and health centers. The Chapqal school was among the first places completely destroyed, leaving hundreds of students homeless and without classrooms.

While ensuring the right to education for Afghan children and adolescents is the responsibility of the authorities and the governing system, the Taliban administration has not played an effective role in the reconstruction and support of educational institutions, and the urgent educational needs of residents in the affected areas have so far been overlooked. The lack of serious attention from the Taliban administration to these sectors has resulted in a growing dependency on international aid.
