New Registration Guidelines for Afghan Students Announced in Tehran

The Education Department of Tehran has announced that, based on a new amendment, a number of Afghan children who have not yet been able to register for schools will now be eligible for enrollment. This decision was made after the registration ban on migrant students faced widespread international backlash and concern from human rights organizations.

According to the new directive, those who can register must either have attended schools in Iran last year or have at least one family member currently enrolled in education. Additionally, students who hold a census registration and are in the process of receiving residential permits are also included in this amendment.

The circular emphasizes that school administrators must promptly accept these students and provide them with the necessary educational opportunities. This comes as thousands of Afghan children in Iran have been deprived of education in recent years due to a lack of identification or residency documents.

Families whose children fall under this amendment have also been advised to visit the Foreign Nationals and Immigrants Affairs Office as soon as possible to obtain temporary residence cards and valid enrollment certificates, and to submit the necessary documents to the school.

This action comes at a time when the Taliban administration inside Afghanistan has closed educational opportunities for a large percentage of the population, especially for girls, leading many to seek educational prospects outside the country. The question now is whether Iran and other countries will fulfill their responsibilities toward the education of Afghan migrant children in a transparent and sustainable manner.
