Taliban Representative in Tehran Meets Iranian Foreign Ministry Official

Mawlawi Fazl Mohammad Haqqani, acting head of the Afghan embassy in Tehran under Taliban administration, has held talks with Ali Akbar Nazari, Director General of Protocol at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss bilateral relations.

The meeting, held in an official setting, emphasized the expansion of diplomatic cooperation and an increase in interactions between their respective institutions. However, no specific details about the agenda or any agreements reached were disclosed to the media.

The Taliban, who seized control of Afghanistan by force in August 2021, have yet to be officially recognized by the vast majority of countries worldwide. The public participation of Taliban-affiliated individuals in international meetings or diplomatic events has raised concerns about providing the group with de facto legitimacy.

Human rights activists and many Afghan citizens fear that such engagements could lead to the dismissal of the Taliban’s repressive and anti-human rights policies within the country.
