UN Women Deploys Assessment Teams After Northern Afghanistan Earthquake

UN Women has sent assessment teams to northern Afghanistan following an overnight earthquake that struck parts of the region. The agency stated that it is working in coordination with local organizations to urgently assess the immediate needs of women and girls affected by the natural disaster.
In a post on its official X account (formerly Twitter), UN Women emphasized that teams of Afghan women aid workers have been deployed to conduct preliminary assessments and deliver initial assistance to vulnerable communities.
The Taliban administration, which currently governs Afghanistan, has previously imposed strict restrictions on humanitarian operations, particularly those related to women’s rights, often hindering the effectiveness of international aid efforts.
In the absence of accountable and transparent governing bodies within the Taliban-led administration, efforts by organizations such as UN Women to support Afghan women have become increasingly critical. As of now, no detailed information has been released about the number of casualties or the extent of the damage.
