Former Afghan VP Warns of Taliban Threats Against Lahore and Islamabad

Amrullah Saleh, former Vice President of Afghanistan, has issued a warning on the social media platform X regarding recent Taliban statements threatening to “raise the white flag in Lahore and set Islamabad on fire,” urging that such threats be taken seriously.

In his message, Saleh asserted that the Taliban have openly spoken about carrying out bombings and explosive attacks within Pakistani territory—a move he believes goes beyond mere posturing. He stated, “The Taliban have repeatedly demonstrated their competence and experience in executing large-scale urban attacks.”

Saleh cited the 2017 Kabul bombing as an example, in which over 700 residents of the capital were killed or injured. The incident ranks as one of the deadliest security events in Afghanistan’s recent history.

He further noted that the Taliban maintain significant influence over Pakistani territory and local structures, warning that Pakistan’s intelligence agency, the ISI, should recognize that some of its trained operatives have now become radicalized and unpredictable elements.

These remarks come at a time of growing tension between the Taliban-run administration in Afghanistan and the Pakistani government, with increased concerns over regional instability and security threats.
