Former Afghan Leaders Express Sympathy After Deadly Northern Earthquake

Following a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake that struck parts of northern Afghanistan last night, particularly affecting the provinces of Balkh and Samangan, several prominent Afghan political figures have issued messages expressing their condolences to the victims’ families.

Former Afghan President Hamid Karzai, in a message delivered in both Pashto and Persian, extended his sympathies to the families of those killed and urged both national and international organizations to provide immediate assistance to those affected. He also prayed for strength and patience for the bereaved families.

Simultaneously, Dr. Abdullah Abdullah, the former head of the High Council for National Reconciliation, also released a statement expressing his deep sorrow over the loss of life and property caused by the quake. He called on humanitarian agencies and capable citizens to act responsibly and urgently assist the victims. Abdullah also prayed for divine forgiveness for those who died and a swift recovery for the injured.

According to the Ministry of Public Health under Taliban administration, at least 20 people have died and over 500 others were injured in the earthquake. The Taliban, as the entity responsible for disaster management and relief operations, is once again under public and human rights scrutiny over its response to the crisis.

As residents in the quake-stricken areas face serious challenges, there are growing expectations that emergency relief from both national and international bodies will be delivered promptly, transparently, and equitably to those in need.
