Pakistan Defense Minister Describes Kabul Border Agreement as Temporary

Pakistan’s Defense Minister, Khawaja Asif, has described the recent agreement between Pakistan and the Taliban administration in Kabul as temporary, stating that it was formed based on limited operational and time-bound conditions.
According to Asif, the agreement was aimed at managing border tensions and reducing destabilizing factors along the Durand Line. However, he emphasized that it should not be expected to last long or to resolve fundamental challenges.
His remarks come amid unprecedented tension along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in recent months, during which both sides have repeatedly accused each other of fostering insecurity.
Previously, Pakistani officials have frequently voiced concerns over the presence of anti-Islamabad militant groups operating from Afghan territory. The Taliban administration has consistently denied these allegations and refused to take responsibility for securing the border.
Political analysts say the Defense Minister’s comments highlight the depth of mutual distrust, which cannot be bridged by temporary agreements alone. They also note that the absence of a legitimate and accountable authority in Kabul remains a core obstacle to lasting engagement.
