Severe Drought Threatens Livelihoods Across Afghanistan

An unprecedented drought has gripped Afghanistan, severely impacting the livelihoods of its people—particularly farmers and herders. The crisis has been exacerbated by the ineffective governance of the Taliban administration, leaving many families facing hunger and homelessness.
Amid these harsh conditions, the United Nations’ Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), with financial support from the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and through the Special Fund for Emergency and Rehabilitation Activities (SFERA), is providing urgent assistance to vulnerable farmers.
Despite being the main authority responsible for managing natural disasters, the Taliban administration has failed to present a clear plan to address the drought’s impacts and has also posed challenges to international aid organizations. In the absence of sufficient support from the current government, many Afghans now look to international organizations and global cooperation for relief.
Experts warn that if the drought continues and the Taliban remains inactive, Afghanistan could face a far more severe and dangerous humanitarian crisis.
