Senior Taliban Security Official Meets Turkish Deputy Interior Minister in Tehran

Mullah Mohammad Ibrahim Sadr, the Senior Deputy Minister for Security Affairs in the Taliban-run Ministry of Interior, met with Turkey’s Deputy Interior Minister and his accompanying delegation on the sidelines of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) summit in Tehran.
According to a statement from the Taliban administration, the meeting included discussions on various topics, including bilateral cooperation and the current security situation. In a controversial comment, the Turkish Deputy Interior Minister described some developments under Taliban rule as “positive” and claimed that human and drug trafficking had dropped by 50 percent.
The meeting took place amid growing domestic and international criticism of the Taliban administration over its strict policies, suppression of civil liberties, and failure to ensure lasting security. Critics of the regime have repeatedly warned of mismanagement in combating drug trafficking and its disregard for human rights.
The Taliban’s ambassador to Iran also attended the meeting, accompanied by a delegation traveling with the senior Afghan security official.
