Pakistani Delegation on Verge of Withdrawing from Istanbul Talks with Taliban

While negotiations between Taliban and Pakistani delegations continue in Istanbul, Turkey, sources within the Taliban administration have said the Pakistani representatives lack the authority to make decisions and may leave the talks.

A Taliban official, speaking on condition of anonymity to Taliban-run National Television, stated that “certain circles within the Pakistani army” are obstructing constructive dialogue, rendering the Pakistani delegation unable to advance the talks. According to the official, a lack of coordination within Pakistan’s government is a major reason for the stalled progress.

Citing the unnamed official, National Television reported that the Taliban delegation has tried to continue the talks neutrally and without tension. However, the Pakistani side has shown little willingness to resolve disputes through diplomatic means. The source alleged that the Pakistani delegation is “devoid of logic and reasoning” and intends to exit the negotiations without providing clear answers.

According to the report, the Taliban have maintained that they neither have the ability to prevent attacks on Pakistani soil nor can they represent Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). The group has denied responsibility for recent attacks, labeling the issue as an internal matter for Pakistan.

The Taliban source said the issue is neither new nor rooted in Afghan soil, but rather originates from Pakistan’s own past—adding that Pakistan itself must take steps to resolve it. He also described Pakistan’s expectation for the Taliban to prevent domestic attacks as “unreasonable.”

So far, Pakistani officials have not responded to reports of their potential withdrawal from the talks. This comes despite earlier statements by Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid, suggesting that both sides had reached preliminary agreements and that a final deal could be concluded by the end of Monday.
