Taliban Claims to Have Resolved Three Family Disputes in Nangarhar

The Taliban’s Department for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice in Nangarhar province has claimed to have peacefully resolved three major family disputes in the districts of Pachiragam, Hisarak, and Gushta.

According to the released information, the first case in Pachiragam district involved a disagreement between two families over a girl’s marriage. The dispute reportedly stemmed from cultural misconceptions, and Taliban ‘accountability agents,’ in collaboration with local clerics and elders, resolved the matter through religious advice.

In the second incident, in Hisarak district, two families had been engaged in a long-standing feud. It is said that with the Taliban’s intervention and encouragement of “Islamic brotherhood,” the hostile relationship was transformed into friendship.

In the third case, in Gushta district, the Taliban administration stated that a domestic violence case involving a woman had been investigated by their officials and resolved through Islamic recommendations. The family of the husband reportedly pledged not to commit further acts of violence against her.

While the peaceful resolution of family disputes is significant, the Taliban’s involvement in such matters without oversight from legitimate and independent judicial institutions raises concerns about injustice, coercion, and unequal access to justice.

Several human rights organizations and civil society activists have expressed concerns that resolving disputes through the Taliban’s religious institutions — without regard for national laws and individual rights — can lead to violations of women’s rights and the continuation of systemic discrimination.
