Taliban Launches Automated Weather System at Maimana Airport

The Meteorology Department of Afghanistan’s Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, under Taliban control, has installed and activated a modern, automated weather monitoring system at the Maimana Airport, the capital of Faryab province.
According to officials from the department, the aim of the initiative is to provide accurate weather data and enhance flight safety at the airport.
The system is capable of automatically recording and analyzing data related to temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, rainfall, and atmospheric pressure. The analysis of this data plays a vital role in improving weather forecasts and managing meteorological risks.
Faryab province, located in northern Afghanistan, is among the regions that experience heavy winter rainfall and sudden drops in temperature. In the past, the lack of advanced equipment at the country’s airports has repeatedly led to flight cancellations or delays and increased safety risks for air travel.
Although the installation of such technology is considered an important step toward improving meteorological services, critics argue that the Taliban administration is making these moves despite lacking international legitimacy and amid a severe shortage of basic services across the country. Social media users have also criticized the focus on technical appearances while many families remain without access to electricity or clean drinking water.
