Khalilzad Warns Pakistan’s Defense Minister’s Threat to Afghanistan Is ‘Dangerous and Concerning’

Zalmay Khalilzad, the former U.S. envoy for Afghan peace, has condemned recent remarks by Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Asif, calling his threat against Afghanistan both dangerous and troubling.
In a statement, Khalilzad said that Asif is not only known for his personal opposition to Afghans, but also holds negative views toward ethnic Pashtuns within Pakistan. He warned against allowing the personal sentiments of a political figure to push the two neighboring countries toward a potentially catastrophic conflict.
Khalilzad emphasized that a war between Afghanistan and Pakistan would bring no victory for either side and would have devastating consequences for both nations and the wider region. He argued that there are better avenues to resolve disputes, including dialogue, mutual understanding, bilateral agreements, and constructive neighborly relations.
His comments come at a time of unprecedented tension between the Taliban-led administration in Afghanistan and the Pakistani government. In recent days, Pakistani officials have repeatedly accused the Taliban of supporting insurgent groups operating inside Pakistan—allegations that the Taliban have consistently denied.
In light of recent developments, Khalilzad has urged for political restraint and diplomatic solutions to ensure regional stability and prevent the crisis from escalating further.
