Senior Iranian Diplomat Meets Taliban Officials to Discuss Legal and Consular Cooperation

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran’s Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs, met with Shamsuddin Shariati, Head of Oversight and Enforcement of Decrees and Rulings of the Taliban administration, on Saturday in Kabul. The meeting focused on legal and judicial cooperation between the two countries.

According to information released by Iran’s embassy in Kabul, the two sides discussed the transfer of prisoners, extradition of offenders, and the consular rights of Iranian detainees in Afghanistan, reaching some preliminary understandings.

Although the exact details of the agreements were not disclosed, the participation of a senior Iranian legal official in matters concerning Iranian nationals imprisoned in Afghanistan signals Tehran’s concern over their situation.

While such talks may indicate a willingness to address bilateral legal issues, there remain serious unanswered questions about the transparency of judicial processes, prison conditions, and human rights protections in Taliban-controlled areas. International organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about human rights violations in Afghan detention facilities.
