Pakistan Warns of Possible Military Clash with Taliban as Talks Stall

Pakistan’s Defense Minister Khawaja Muhammad Asif has warned that ongoing negotiations with the Taliban may be fruitless and raised the possibility of a military confrontation. Speaking at a press conference, Asif said that if the talks currently taking place in Istanbul, Turkey, fail to yield results, Pakistan may be forced into an “open war” with the group.

Asif cited Taliban involvement in border insecurity and attacks on Pakistani forces, emphasizing that Islamabad prefers a political solution. However, he warned that if such efforts fail, “decisive action” will be taken.

He also alluded to the background of some Taliban figures, stating, “We held talks in Doha with individuals who were all raised in Pakistan.” This comment hints at the long-standing relationship and Pakistan’s alleged unofficial support for the Taliban in the past.

The Taliban administration has not yet issued an official response to Asif’s remarks. Nevertheless, increasing tensions between Islamabad and the Taliban could have significant consequences for security in border regions and the status of Afghan refugees in Pakistan. Analysts believe continued Taliban support for militant groups along the shared border is a key concern for Pakistani authorities.
