UN Agencies Build New School to Replace Tents for Afghan Students

A number of children who had previously studied under tents in harsh environmental conditions have now been moved to safe and well-equipped classrooms. This initiative was carried out by the UN Education Cannot Wait fund (UN STFA) and UN-Habitat.

With the opening of this new school, hundreds of boys and girls who once studied exposed to wind, dust, summer heat, and winter cold, now have access to an environment where dignity, security, and hope are preserved.

The construction and funding of this school is part of ongoing international efforts to ensure access to quality education for Afghan children, especially at a time when the Taliban authorities have imposed sweeping restrictions on girls’ education.

While the opening of the school is an encouraging development, there remains a pressing need for more comprehensive efforts to reopen middle and high schools for girls and to create equitable educational opportunities across the country.
