UK Welcomes Ceasefire Agreement Between Taliban and Pakistan

The United Kingdom has expressed support for the recently announced ceasefire agreement between the Taliban and Pakistan, calling it a step toward regional stability. Thomas Nicholas Falconer, the UK’s Deputy Foreign Minister for the Middle East, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, welcomed the deal in a message posted on social media platform X on Tuesday, 29 Mehr (October 20).

“Regional stability is important. Maintaining this agreement and comprehensive cooperation to defeat terrorism are vital,” Falconer stated in his message. He also highlighted the roles played by Qatar and Turkey in de-escalating tensions and expressed gratitude for their efforts in facilitating a diplomatic opportunity.

The announcement comes after a week of intense border clashes between the Taliban and Pakistani forces. On Sunday, the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire mediated by Qatar and Turkey. This marks the first official ceasefire between the parties in recent months.

While the international community has welcomed the reduction in hostilities, concerns remain over the increasing activity of extremist groups within Afghanistan. Experts warn that without international pressure on the Taliban to curb these groups, lasting stability in the region may remain elusive.
