Colombian President Accuses Trump of Pursuing ‘Slavery’ and Calls for Change

Colombian President Gustavo Petro launched a scathing critique of U.S. President Donald Trump in an interview with the television network Univision, stating that Trump must either change or step down. Petro asserted that Trump has no interest in freedom fighters and instead sees himself as a monarch.

In the interview, Petro accused Trump of trying to revive a system of slavery, saying, “He doesn’t want free men; he wants everyone to obey him.”

The Colombian leader also voiced concern over speculation that the United States might attack Venezuela, calling such a move a political maneuver aimed at seizing control of the country’s oil resources. “Trump is not interested in drug trafficking; that’s just an excuse. What he really wants is control over Venezuela’s oil,” he said.

Without directly addressing Colombia’s role in regional affairs, Petro rejected any suggestion of supporting a military intervention, rhetorically asking, “What wise Colombian citizen would support such a plan?”

Petro also responded to recent comments made by Trump, who previously labeled him a “drug leader.” In a post on the social media platform X, Petro replied, “The problem is with Trump, not with the United States.” He emphasized his respect for the American people, culture, and history, but criticized Trump’s policies as inconsistent with democratic values.

Petro’s remarks come amid escalating tensions between Trump and several Latin American leaders. Analysts warn that a potential resurgence of Trump’s interventionist agenda could repeat past policies that contributed to instability across the Western Hemisphere.
