UN Warns of Afghanistan’s High Vulnerability to Natural Disasters

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) has issued a new report warning that Afghanistan remains significantly vulnerable to natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides.

The agency stated that insufficient preventive measures have been taken to mitigate the risks associated with such disasters and stressed the need to expand preparedness efforts and reduce disaster-related hazards.

UN-Habitat added that it has launched several programs across various provinces aimed at empowering local communities to enhance their resilience to natural crises. Collaborating with residents to build community resilience to natural disasters is among the agency’s top priorities.

This warning comes as Afghanistan’s Taliban administration, despite having ruled the country for the past three years, has yet to implement a comprehensive and effective strategy for disaster risk management. In recent years, thousands of people have lost their lives or been displaced as a result of natural calamities.

Experts cite the Taliban government’s lack of attention to preventive measures and weak crisis management as key factors behind the rising death toll in such events. They warn that the continuation of this situation could have catastrophic consequences for the nation’s residents.
