Iranian and Taliban Officials Hold Border Talks at Mahirud Crossing

In a meeting held at the Mahirud border between Iran and Afghanistan, Hashemi, the governor of Iran’s South Khorasan province, met and held talks with Mullah Mohammad Hafez Mujahid, the Taliban-appointed governor of Farah province. Marhamati, the Consul General of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Herat, was also present at the meeting.

According to information released by the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, the delegations visited the special economic zone and border market area located in Mahirud. The primary objective of the visit was to assess the current situation and find solutions to facilitate the movement of goods through this border crossing.

As Iran continues efforts to strengthen its economic and border relations with neighboring Afghan provinces, such meetings between Iranian officials and representatives of the Taliban administration have persisted. These engagements take place amid ongoing questions regarding the implications of such relations, given the Taliban government’s lack of international recognition.

It is worth noting that the Mahirud crossing is considered one of the most important trade exchange points between Iran and Afghanistan’s Farah province. However, despite its economic significance, challenges related to management, security, and trade transparency remain unresolved.
