Russian Military Bases in Syria Discussed in Putin-al-Sharaa Meeting

During a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ahmed al-Sharaa, head of Syria’s interim government, the issue of Russian military bases on Syrian territory was seriously discussed. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov confirmed the matter, stating that all topics, including Russia’s military presence in Syria, were reviewed during the talks.

Lavrov had previously said that Damascus supports the continued operation of Russian military bases in the port of Tartus and the Hmeimim airbase. He also noted the possibility that these military facilities could be converted into humanitarian aid centers in the future.

Ahead of the meeting, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov had already announced that the question of Russian military bases on Syrian soil would be on the agenda of the talks between Putin and al-Sharaa.

At the beginning of the meeting, Ahmed al-Sharaa highlighted the political and historical ties between Syria and Russia, stating that his country is striving to revive its strategic relationships with regional and global partners, particularly with Russia. He also affirmed that Damascus remains committed to previous agreements and seeks to strengthen ties based on mutual interests.
