FAO Marks 80 Years of Fighting Hunger Amid Worsening Crisis in Afghanistan

On World Food Day, the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, in a message from Geneva, announced that since 1945 the agency has been working to combat hunger, strengthen food security, and promote sustainable agriculture.
The organization stated that over the past eight decades, it has played a vital role in delivering emergency food aid, creating agricultural employment opportunities, and supporting vulnerable communities.
“From emergency food assistance to sustainable farming development, we have helped nourish hope since 1945,” the FAO message said.
While such events highlight global efforts to eradicate hunger, in Afghanistan — especially under Taliban rule — millions face limited access to food and malnutrition. Severe restrictions on women, the collapse of the economic system, and the absence of a clear agricultural policy from the Taliban administration have exacerbated food security challenges.
Experts warn that without the return of a responsive government, systematic planning, and meaningful engagement with the international community, Afghanistan’s food crisis will only deepen over time.
