UN Warns Migratory Birds Are Victims of Urban Expansion

The United Nations, based in Geneva, has expressed concern that migratory birds are increasingly suffering from the negative consequences of urban expansion and human interventions. The international organization emphasizes that habitat destruction, environmental pollution, food shortages, and the risk of collision with buildings are among the major challenges threatening the survival of these species.

According to environmental experts, while bird migration is an essential part of ecological balance, rampant urban development in many countries has endangered this natural process. Increased unnecessary lighting, unplanned construction, and noise and air pollution have made living conditions for birds more difficult.

However, the UN states that human proximity to natural bird habitats does not necessarily mean their destruction. The organization calls on all people and institutions to work toward creating healthy environments, reducing pollution, providing natural food sources for birds, and implementing measures to prevent bird collisions with buildings, aiming to build cities and habitats compatible with bird life.

In Afghanistan, a sharp decline in the number of migratory birds has been observed in recent years, partly attributed to war, environmental degradation, and the Taliban administration’s neglect of environmental issues. Given the environmental and ecological importance of migratory birds, there is a human responsibility to ensure that policies are based on preserving biodiversity.
