Indian MP Condemns Taliban’s Gender Discrimination During Amir Khan Muttaqi’s Delhi Visit

Mahua Moitra, a member of the Indian Parliament, has strongly criticized the Taliban administration’s misogynistic behavior during Amir Khan Muttaqi’s visit to New Delhi. She expressed her displeasure on the social media platform X over the Indian government’s official red-carpet welcome for Muttaqi, the acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban regime.
Moitra, voicing concern over the growing international legitimacy granted to a group that ignores the basic rights of women in Afghanistan, highlighted that female journalists were not allowed to participate in the Taliban official’s press conference. She described this conduct as a blatant violation of the principles of equality and freedom of the press.
Since regaining power in 2021, the Taliban government has severely restricted a broad range of women’s rights in Afghanistan, including access to education, employment, and political participation. Human rights organizations and thousands of Afghan women have repeatedly protested against these repressive measures.
Simultaneously, the Taliban’s treatment of female journalists during an official event on Indian soil has sparked widespread criticism among civil society groups and social media users within India. Critics question why the Indian government is hosting an official from a regime that systematically suppresses women and silences female journalists.
