UNICEF Warns Heavy Rains Hampering Earthquake Relief Efforts in Eastern Afghanistan

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that ongoing heavy rains in eastern Afghanistan are making urgent aid efforts for earthquake victims increasingly difficult.
The agency has stated that since the recent earthquake struck the eastern provinces, it has mobilized all its resources to address the immediate needs of affected children and families. However, continuous rainfall has blocked roads and slowed down the delivery of assistance.
Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, UNICEF has called on other humanitarian organizations to join the relief efforts before the onset of winter to help save the lives of hundreds of children and families.
The recent earthquakes in some southeastern and eastern provinces have left tens of thousands homeless and created an immediate need for food, shelter, medical services, and drinking water—while the Taliban administration has failed to provide an effective response to the crisis.
At the same time, challenges stemming from the Taliban’s international isolation and a lack of adequate emergency management capacity have made it even more difficult for humanitarian organizations to assist those affected.
