760-meter irrigation canal inaugurated in Khost

The United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Afghanistan has announced the inauguration of a 760-meter irrigation canal in Khost province. The project, funded by the United Nations Special Trust Fund for Afghanistan (STFA), will provide irrigation access to more than 300 families in the province.
According to the agency, the canal has the capacity to irrigate 2,000 jeribs of farmland. It is expected to improve the livelihoods of local farming families and play a significant role in strengthening the local economy.
In the absence of a legitimate and accountable administration, many of the country’s development projects rely on international organizations for management and funding. This project is an example of global efforts to mitigate the negative impact of Taliban governance on essential infrastructure and the livelihoods of the Afghan people.
The Taliban administration, by failing to provide basic services and effectively manage development projects, has increased dependence on foreign aid. Under such circumstances, the construction and maintenance of agricultural facilities require continued international attention and support.
