Spanta: Taliban Are More Effective Servants of U.S. Interests

Former Afghan foreign minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta has said that the Taliban serve U.S. interests in Afghanistan more effectively than any other force. His remarks came in response to recent threats by Donald Trump to retake the Bagram airbase.

In a note posted on his X page on Monday, September 22, Spanta strongly criticized the approach of regional and global powers toward Afghanistan. He said that for nearly five decades, whenever Moscow, Islamabad, or Washington has spoken, parts of Afghan society have either been filled with hope or overcome with fear.

Spanta emphasized that Afghans have suffered the most from the involvement of foreign powers in their country’s internal affairs. Instead of improving conditions, he argued, foreign presence has deepened crises and weakened the people’s will.

Referring to current U.S. policy toward the Taliban, Spanta said that whether or not Washington strikes agreements with the group makes no difference for ordinary Afghans. The real solution, he stressed, lies within Afghan society itself.

He called for political awakening, popular mobilization, and reliance on internal strength to end Taliban dominance, urging collective efforts to build a government accountable to the people’s will.
