EU and UNDP Delegation Meets Women Entrepreneurs in Herat

A delegation from the European Union and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently traveled to Herat province to meet with women entrepreneurs and local traders.

The visit was part of ongoing joint efforts by the EU and UNDP to support small and medium-sized enterprises in western Afghanistan. These initiatives are centered on sectors such as food processing, saffron, and textiles—industries that play a crucial role in the local economy, particularly in creating jobs for women.

During the trip, the delegation visited several workshops and production centers run by women and discussed technical and financial support mechanisms. According to UNDP, such cooperation is vital for generating employment opportunities and improving household livelihoods in the province.

This comes as the Taliban authorities continue to impose severe restrictions on Afghan women’s economic and social freedoms, while also failing to provide adequate support for small businesses. Continued visits and external assistance underscore both the lack of effective domestic institutions and the urgent need of communities for international resources and connections.
