UNHCR Representative Meets Chinese Ambassador in Kabul to Discuss Afghan Returnees

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) representative in Afghanistan met with the Ambassador of the People’s Republic of China in Kabul yesterday. During the meeting, the two sides discussed the situation of returning Afghan refugees and explored ways to enhance bilateral cooperation.

Both parties emphasized the need to strengthen multilateral efforts to support Afghans who are returning home after years of displacement. These discussions come at a time when tens of thousands of returnees from neighboring countries are facing severe economic hardship due to the lack of clear support programs.

The Taliban administration, which effectively controls the country, has yet to present a comprehensive plan for the reception, housing, and sustainable integration of returnees. International organizations have repeatedly warned that without adequate support, the return process may lead to a new humanitarian crisis.

The UNHCR representative and the Chinese ambassador also highlighted the importance of multilateral cooperation in addressing the needs of Afghanistan’s most vulnerable populations, particularly the returnees. Both sides pledged to utilize all available resources to improve the situation.
