Governor of Herat Announces Construction of First Vehicle Underpass in the City

The local administration in Herat has announced the start of construction on a vehicle underpass, the first of its kind in Afghanistan.

According to Noor Ahmad Islamjar, the Taliban-appointed governor of Herat, the underpass will be built in the city center at a cost of more than 60 million afghanis. He said the project aims to ease traffic congestion and improve the city’s infrastructure.

Urban reconstruction and infrastructure projects of this kind are considered essential for cities like Herat. However, residents have voiced concerns that in the absence of effective oversight, the project may lack proper quality or be left unfinished.

Criticism has also persisted over the lack of transparency in procurement and financing of infrastructure projects under Taliban rule. Experts stress that such initiatives can only succeed if implemented with independent monitoring and genuine public participation.
